Newwork 24 - ACRA - Javett

The blog post aims to reflect on a recent visit to the Javett Art Centre for the closing programs of ACRA's NEWWORK24, held on March 2, 2024. Throughout this article, I'll discuss my own experiences, reasons for attending the program, and active engagement in its activities. In addition, I will give constructive critique to each group engaged and provide significant insights and highlights from their presentations. Finally, I'll talk about which group connected with me the best and which one I'd like to join. As a direct audience member, I can provide honest opinions and diverse points of view.

I trust that you will find this reflection both informative and enjoyable. Your engagement through comments, ratings, likes, and shares is greatly appreciated.

I think it’s important to give a little background on the exhibition, the parties involved, and why it was important for the exhibition to happen.

Javett

The Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) is a tribute to the University of Pretoria's collaboration with the Javett Foundation. Based on a similar respect for the transformational potential of the arts, both organizations promote the role of creativity in public enrichment and educational achievement. Javett-UP is a vibrant hub for connecting with Africa's rich cultural past and imagining its future direction, combining academic rigor with public accessibility.

The Javett Art Centre owes its origins to the Javett family's visionary management, which Michael Javett continues to provide. Recognizing the enormous educational potential of their collection of 20th-century South African artworks, Michael decided to broaden its reach by locating it in an academic institution. His idea was centered on making these culturally significant objects accessible to everyone.

The Javett Art Centre, which houses a public art gallery and the Mapungubwe museum, is perfectly incorporated into the University's South Campus, with a large open museum plaza that includes facilities like as a cafeteria and outdoor exhibition spaces. This intelligent design not only serves as a platform for presenting South African national treasures, but it also revitalizes the old 'Tukkielaan' across Lynwood Road, strengthening the University of Pretoria's cultural heartbeat.

Within this architectural marvel are two distinct open squares: the museum square, a vibrant public space on the southern side of Lynnwood Road that serves as a hub for community engagement and cultural exchange, and the art square, located at the intersection of the bridge gallery and the University's Hatfield campus, which serves as a focal point for artistic exploration and innovation. The art square, designed as a venue for international sculptural exhibits and competitions, also promotes multidisciplinary cooperation by connecting the faculties of the Built Environment and Visual Arts via a student gallery area below. In essence, the Javett Art Centre at UP not only commemorates South Africa's cultural past but also acts as a beacon of creativity and inclusion for future generations.

Another Roadmap Africa Cluster (ACRA)

August 12, 2023 - March 14, 2024

Another Roadmap Africa Cluster (ARAC) is a collaborative effort among African researchers and cultural practitioners that began in 2015 and is focused to researching arts education methods across Africa. Operating in a variety of formal and informal contexts, their research is heavily anchored in historical study, notably of Africa's colonial history.

ARAC's working groups are located in several African cities, including Kampala, Nyanza, Lubumbashi, Kinshasa, Maseru, Johannesburg, Lagos, and Cairo, as part of the Another Roadmap School, a worldwide network of educators and researchers covering twenty-four cities across four continents. Their combined goal is to create a common reservoir of knowledge and foster a culture of mutual learning that helps African practitioners while also contributing to the growth of global educational discourse.

ARAC's work with the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) has been focused on the Schoolbook Project. This effort aims to increase access to the group's substantial work and expertise gained since 2015. This includes "PROVOCATIONS," a collection of thought-provoking inquiries in arts education; "EXERCISES," which systematically organize the methodologies developed by the group; and "GLOSSARY," a compendium of indigenous African terms delineating concepts analogous to, but distinct from, European notions of art, artist, aesthetics, design, and education.

Newwork

The ARAC Closing Programme featured NEWWORK24, a public engagement initiative that constituted a crucial component of the professional practice leading up to the culmination of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Wits University. Fourth-year Fine Arts students from the Wits School of the Arts participated in this day-long interdisciplinary program, aimed at celebrating the ethos of collective and self-publication, as well as the art of bookmaking within the context of ARAC's residency conclusion at the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP). The program was skillfully facilitated by ARAC member and Wits lecturer, Rangoato Hlasane.

Eight collectives were paired off to have discussions that focused on themes from their publications and their interconnectedness within the art world. These conversations delved into a wide array of topics, including care, capitalism, mental health, war, freedom, and more. They reflected the diverse spectrum of their collective interests and concerns.

The NEWWORK24 consists of 8 collectives namely:

My experience at Javett for the closing of ACRA featured Newwork24

My experience at Javett for the closing of ACRA featuring Newwork24 was a captivating journey filled with introspection and connection. As I stepped onto the ground floor of Javett, the lingering presence of the ARCA Program's works still adorned the space, creating an atmosphere infused with artistic energy. The lighting was impeccable, casting a gentle glow on the vibrant artworks, although I couldn't shake off a slight chill in the air. Nevertheless, the temperature was perfectly regulated, and the space felt refreshingly ventilated.

As I eagerly awaited the commencement of the program, I took the opportunity to explore the captivating array of books related to art education, with a notable emphasis on African art education. Within these pages, I stumbled upon thought-provoking questions that sparked deep introspection. Questions like, "What does it mean for me as a young Black South African man to create art in this day and age?" resonated deeply within me, prompting a journey of self-discovery and reflection on my artistic practice. Each question seemed to peel back layers of my identity, challenging me to confront my perspectives and motivations.

As the program unfolded, I found myself immersed in a rich tapestry of insights and intimate moments. It was a rare occasion where I felt truly connected to the group, transcending the barriers of self-doubt and reservation that often lingered within me. Despite my initial hesitations and feelings of not fully belonging, the day proved to be a breakthrough in forging deeper connections with my peers.

Observing their interactions, I was struck by the palpable sense of love, friendship, and camaraderie that permeated the group. Each individual brought their unique perspectives, experiences, and identities, yet they seamlessly coalesced into a cohesive collective. As one member of Paper Jam eloquently put it, "We are different parts of a body, each with our own functions, yet united as one entity." This notion of "holding each other's space" resonated deeply with me, highlighting the power of fostering growth within diversity while nurturing a shared sense of purpose.

Throughout the day, I witnessed the brilliance of this concept unfold in the intimate exchanges and interactions among the group members. It was a testament to the transformative potential of genuine connection and mutual support, fostering an environment where individuals could thrive and flourish together.

The reason why I joined this closing and my involvement.

One of the primary motivations driving me to attend the show was to gain invaluable insights into hosting events centered around publications. As someone on the cusp of publishing my debut novel and planning to host a book launch in the near future, I felt it was essential to equip myself with practical knowledge and firsthand experience. They say experience is the best teacher, and I couldn't agree more.

Yet, beyond the practical aspect, my attendance was also deeply rooted in a sense of camaraderie and support for my fellow peers and colleagues in the art world. I firmly believe that community is instrumental in an artist's growth, and healthy communities thrive on mutual support. Over the years, I've learned firsthand the importance of caring for one another within the artistic community and witnessing the collaborative efforts of the Newwork24 collective further reinforced this belief.

Engaging with the Network24 collective not only provided me with invaluable insights but also reignited my creative spirit. After a challenging month devoid of any creative output, the synergy and energy I experienced at the closing of Newwork24 were truly revitalizing. It's moments like these that remind me of the profound impact of artistic community and collaboration, and I feel inspired to share my reflections through this blog.

Offering constructive feedback to each group is essential for growth and improvement, but it's important to approach it with sensitivity and empathy. Let me reassure you that my intention is not to pass judgment but rather to provide insightful observations and perspectives. Consider this as a collaborative dialogue aimed at shedding light on overlooked aspects and offering subjective insights from my personal experiences.

In providing feedback, I aim to maintain a respectful and supportive environment, guided by principles of kindness and care. This ensures that each group constructively receives feedback, fostering an atmosphere conducive to growth and learning. I will strive to maintain objectivity where necessary, offering balanced critiques that encourage reflection and development.

Rest assured, this process is rooted in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding, where feedback catalyzes positive change and enhancement. Let's embark on this journey of constructive criticism together, with the shared goal of nurturing creativity and excellence.

This reflection is presented in no specific order, but rather based on the speed at which I recall each name. While the act of remembering names may seem trivial to some, I found it particularly intriguing and felt compelled to begin with this observation.

Understanding the context surrounding each name and my engagement with every group significantly influenced my memory retention. Reflecting on the factors that contributed to this listing, one might wonder about the influences that shaped my recollection.

Paper Jam

Artistic Discourse in Art Education: Exploring Contemporary Themes with NEWWORK24 - 8 Collectives in 4 Conversations

Paper Jam left a lasting impression on me for several reasons, but what struck me most profoundly was their unwavering commitment to the juxtaposition of humor and trauma, a core value that I found challenging to fully embrace. As someone who admittedly struggles to grasp jokes quickly and approaches trauma in a different manner, I initially felt apprehensive about fitting into their dynamic.

However, witnessing Paper Jam's presentation at the event was truly enlightening. Despite my initial reservations, I was captivated by how authentically they embodied their core concept. From the moment they stepped on stage, their collective persona shone through, evident in their individual traits, demeanor, and expressions. Their ability to seamlessly blend humor into their dialogue, even during a time when hunger threatened to dampen the audience's spirits, was a testament to their authenticity and cohesion as a group.

What struck me most was the organic nature of their presentation. It felt effortless and genuine, never forced or contrived. Their laughter was infectious, creating an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie that resonated with the audience. Even their publication, humorously titled 'The Bible,' exemplified their commitment to their core values.

In the end, witnessing Paper Jam in action left me with a newfound appreciation for their unique approach. Their ability to infuse humor into the discussion of challenging topics was not only refreshing but also deeply impactful. As one member jokingly remarked, "It can even make Jesus laugh."

Hoops

Artistic Discourse in Art Education: Exploring Contemporary Themes with NEWWORK24 - 8 Collectives in 4 Conversations

Hoops left a deep impression on me with their nostalgic approach, evoking memories of what I fondly refer to as "my olden days." What truly resonated with me was the unwavering support and solidarity they demonstrated for one another, particularly when they took center stage. Their ability to hold space for each other was remarkable, highlighting the profound sense of sisterhood within the group.

As they spoke passionately about their collective, I couldn't help but sense the intense intimacy of their bond. It was palpable, almost tangible, as if I could reach out and touch it. The way they spoke of each other was reminiscent of childhood friends or beloved family members, emphasizing the depth of their connection.

This sense of sisterhood is especially crucial given the subject matters that Hoops explores. Their ability to navigate sensitive topics with such grace and solidarity speaks volumes about the strength of their collective bond. Witnessing their camaraderie was not only heartwarming but also served as a powerful reminder of the importance of support and kinship, particularly in the face of challenging subject matter.

We are missing some members of our collective, but they are here with us in spirit.

Outcast

Artistic Discourse in Art Education: Exploring Contemporary Themes with NEWWORK24 - 8 Collectives in 4 Conversations

Among all the collectives, Outcast left the deepest impression on me, albeit not in the most favorable light. I can't quite put my finger on what went wrong, but I can't help but feel a sense of disappointment with how things unfolded. The absence of all but one member at such a significant program was disheartening, leaving me longing for a different outcome.

Moreover, the lone member's apparent struggle to articulate the group's vision and goals exposed a glaring gap within the collective. It became evident that there was a lack of cohesion and mutual understanding, leading to a palpable lack of energy and vitality within the group. While submission can sometimes be a positive trait, in this context, it seemed to stifle the potential for collaboration and creativity, overshadowing what could have been a beautiful work of art.

Artistic Discourse in Art Education: Exploring Contemporary Themes with NEWWORK24 - 8 Collectives in 4 Conversations

Despite these challenges, I couldn't help but appreciate the intriguing elements present in Outcast's publication. Despite my initial resistance, I found myself drawn to the thought-provoking content and the underlying beauty encapsulated within their name. Reflecting on my experience with the group and their publication, I realized that even amidst disappointment, there were moments of unexpected beauty and inspiration to be found.

Terms & Conditions

Artistic Discourse in Art Education: Exploring Contemporary Themes with NEWWORK24 - 8 Collectives in 4 Conversations

Terms & Conditions is a collective that, at first glance, might seem steeped in technicality and logic, given its name. However, delving deeper into their concepts and core values reveals a surprising degree of flexibility and compassion within the group. What struck me most profoundly was their unwavering commitment to the idea of care, which felt almost transcendental in nature.

The standout feature of Terms & Conditions is their genuine embodiment of this ethos of care, which permeates every aspect of their work. Despite facing similar challenges as other groups, such as missing members, they demonstrated a remarkable capacity to nurture and support each other. I was moved by one member's poignant remark: "We are missing some members of our collective, but they are here with us in spirit." It's the subtle nuances and gestures that often go unnoticed that truly matter, and in this case, it encapsulated the essence of what it means to care deeply for one another.

Artistic Discourse in Art Education: Exploring Contemporary Themes with NEWWORK24 - 8 Collectives in 4 Conversations

In a world fraught with chaos and suffering, the question of why we should care weighs heavily on our minds. It's a question that prompts deep reflection and invites diverse perspectives. During our discussions, I found myself grappling with the notion of human capability for care, ultimately expressing skepticism. However, I'm eager to engage in dialogue and hear others' thoughts on this matter. Please feel free to share your insights in the comments below.

The Struggle Continues

Embracing the theme "The Struggle Continues," this group exemplified resilience and unity in the face of adversity. Despite facing challenges, they showcased a remarkable ability to set aside individual desires and focus on a common objective: the submission of their work. This collective effort underscored their deep commitment to advancing the group's mission and vision.

Their presentation reflected themes of freedom, capitalism, and peace, resonating with broader societal issues, particularly in the context of South Africa's contemporary landscape leading up to the 2024 elections. As one member of the group aptly expressed, "the future is happening now," emphasizing the relevance and immediacy of their message. In essence, they embodied the concept of "history is now," serving as a poignant reminder of the present's significance in shaping the future.

The group's collective struggle served as a poignant reflection of their core values and beliefs, transcending individual challenges to unite in pursuit of a shared goal. Their dedication and determination served as a powerful testament to the strength of collective action and the potential for meaningful change.

Move!

Encountering Move sparked a profound reflection on my relationship with music, prompting me to question whether I truly listen to it enough, let alone delve into the rich tapestry of South African musical history. As an artist, this introspection served as a catalyst for self-improvement, urging me to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation for the musical landscape that surrounds me. Their presentation ignited a curiosity within me, transforming the pursuit of knowledge into an exhilarating adventure, akin to uncovering a lost treasure.

“Move! has discovered a way to translate sound and music to paper. “ Rangoato Hlasane

What struck me most was Move's ability to seamlessly blend formality with engagement in their presentation. They wielded their knowledge with precision, yet infused it with a palpable enthusiasm that made learning feel not only informative but also enjoyable. Their approach made the journey of seeking knowledge feel like a thrilling pursuit, encouraging me to embrace curiosity and embark on a quest for deeper musical insights.

It’s Weird

Artistic Discourse in Art Education: Exploring Contemporary Themes with NEWWORK24 - 8 Collectives in 4 Conversations

"It's Weird" truly lived up to its name, presenting an experience that defied conventional expectations. What struck me most was their ability to subtly alter the atmosphere of the room with a mere gesture, commanding the attention of the audience effortlessly. This gesture carried a profound sense of power, amplified by their strategic positioning within the space.

Despite not planning the spatial dynamics consciously, the collective's positioning played a pivotal role in shaping the perception of their presentation. While other groups stood up before presenting, "It's Weird" chose to remain seated in the center of a semi-circle, a decision that felt deliberate and impactful. This choice, coupled with their thematic focus on violence, home, and the concept of power, lent a sense of gravity to the moment, inviting deeper reflection.

Artistic Discourse in Art Education: Exploring Contemporary Themes with NEWWORK24 - 8 Collectives in 4 Conversations

Upon reflection, I realized the significance of these simple gestures and spatial dynamics in conveying the collective's message. It was a testament to their ability to manipulate the environment to evoke specific emotions and responses from the audience. The experience left me pondering the intricate interplay between physical space, gestures, and thematic content, underscoring the depth and complexity of their presentation.

Phetoho!

Artistic Discourse in Art Education: Exploring Contemporary Themes with NEWWORK24 - 8 Collectives in 4 Conversations

Phetoho caught my attention as a collective I would wholeheartedly align with. Their embrace of diversity and their unique approach to mundane, everyday objects left a lasting impression on me. The presentation they delivered was executed flawlessly, demonstrating a high level of professionalism and cohesion within the group.

What stood out most was how each member of the collective embodied the vision and values of Phetoho! Their articulate and eloquent communication further underscored their strength as a collective. It was evident that they had a deep understanding of their collective identity and a shared commitment to their goals.

In sum, Phetoho's presentation left me inspired and resonated with me on a personal level. Their commitment to diversity, their innovative approach, and their cohesive teamwork make them a group I would enthusiastically choose to be a part of.

Closing thoughts

While my focus primarily centered on the presentation aspect rather than the content of the publications themselves, I must emphasize the exceptional quality of the publications. Each one was meticulously crafted, demonstrating a thoughtful and cohesive approach to their respective themes. From the layout to the content, it was evident that a great deal of care and effort went into their creation.

Regarding the overall experience, I would rate it an impressive 8 out of 10. As someone who is discerning when it comes to evaluations, this rating speaks volumes about the caliber of the event. The atmosphere was nothing short of remarkable, offering a perfect blend of insight, engagement, and enjoyment. It was an enriching and memorable experience that left a lasting impression on me.

I would like to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation to all the collectives involved and to everyone reading this. May you continue to thrive and achieve even greater success in your endeavors. Let us continue to support one another, holding space with love and respect, and fostering an environment where creativity can flourish and thrive. Here's to continued growth, collaboration, and the pursuit of excellence.

Have a Wonderful day and a beautiful Life. See you in the next post!!
