It was the year 2019, a time when all hope seemed lost, and I found myself wandering aimlessly, haunted by a sense of failure. In the midst of this darkness, it was the transformative power of the arts that became my guiding light, leading me back to a sense of purpose and connection with the world. The beauty and inspiration I found in art became a beacon of hope, reigniting my will to live and paving the road for me to regain my place in the world.
Through the profound impact of creativity, I not only found peace but also discovered the strength within myself to conquer life's challenges. This pivotal moment sparked a journey of self-discovery and renewal, marking the beginning of a new chapter filled with inspiration, purpose, and a profound appreciation for the transformative nature of the arts.

Each medium functions as an entry point to the unique world that exists within my mind, and amid these many realities exists an important notion—the concept of 'home.' This concept of home is central to the process of creation of each artwork, guiding and influencing its development within its particular context of the chosen medium.
Seeing each artistic medium as its entity has deepened my understanding of the dynamic and multidimensional nature of human existence. As a result, every work of art becomes more than just a work of art; it becomes a sanctuary—a place of comfort, escape, expression, and a journey of both learning and unlearning.

In my work, I explore the intricate relationship between the construction of self and the notion of home, heavily influenced by the concepts of time and space. I find that abstracted portraiture and landscapes serve as a perfect framework to fully express my ideas regarding the reconstruction of self in our modern world. Each artwork I create becomes a place of solace, escapism, and self-expression, offering a profound opportunity for both learning and unlearning.

I am Tebogo Khalo, a Johannesburg-based Visual Artist. I was born in 2000, in a town called Sebokeng Zone 7, in South Africa's Gauteng province. I pursued my passion for art at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, where I dedicated years of studying a BA in Fine Arts. This educational journey allowed me to delve deeper into my creative process and develop a solid foundation for my artistic endeavors.
"Home as Self" explores the idea that a person's sense of self is inextricably linked to the physical and emotional connection to their home. In the contemporary globalized South African context, I am particularly interested in the use of vibrant colours to convey the richness and complexity of the individual's relationship to their environment.

I am interested in how our understanding of home and self has been shaped by the forces of history, globalization and modernization. In an increasingly interconnected world, the idea of home has become more fluid and complex, and the concept of self has become more multifaceted and dynamic. Through my work, I look to challenge the traditional notions of portraiture as a static representation of the individual, instead presenting the subject as a dynamic and multi-layered entity that is shaped by their environment.

The concept of home represents a deeply personal and emotional connection to my roots, my identity, and my sense of belonging. Thus, this work reflects also on my own experiences and my own understanding of what it means to be South African in a globalized world.

By using a range of mediums and approaches, I hope to create works that are both visually striking and conceptually rich, and using vibrant colour in my art, I seek to celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of South African culture, while also exploring the ways in which our identities are shaped by the globalized nature of contemporary South African society. Through colour, I want to capture this fluidity and dynamism and to challenge the viewer to consider the ways in which their sense of self is shaped by the world around them.
