Home as the Embodiment: Space, Subject and Composition.

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

This was an exhibition for my mid year exam. It was an introduction to my on going research about the ideas around the concept of home and the word 'home'. it is looking at the materiality of home and the immateriality of home - the emotional and conceptual.

Space is a conceptual feeling that allows humans to engage into making sense of who they are, where they are and what is happening around them. This ideology then poses a question of What is space without the object/subject to identify self and, thus, claim space exists? The idea of space in relation to the geo-location or the physical environment has evolved to level that is now seen as nonexistent. Thus, interrogates the idea of what space is, and where is it? However, my interrogation in this project is looking at space as an Idea of home, and the archetype of home as a concept of ‘embodiment.’

Home is my place of art. I believe that charity begins at home. Traditionally this was a moving home, not a home to own like we do now. My art practices looks at the multidimensional nature of home, seeing home as a medium of self-expression and identity, the themes around ideologies of home and what home could mean. Home seen as a dynamic (re)creation of the environment outside this space.

My hope with this project is truly find why is home important to me, why I feel drawn to places where there are people I love and, not necessarily, the physical structure itself, and finding a comforting feeling with places that are, conventionally, not places one can make home from. And so my aim in this project is to understand my own conceptions of what home is and share it with people.

My evolving ideas for this project has come to a stall of three themes which will be explored throughout the entirety of the year, with experimentations and developing ideas. The themes are more of questions around my conceptual idea of home:

What is Home?

Where is Home?

Who is Home?

All three of this explorative questions might take a diversified approach in terms of the visual, conceptual, materiality and the presentation aspect of the project. Especially, looking at how this questions really diversify my idea of home. So, currently I am working on the my first theme – Who is Home. I am visually exploring and expanding on this theme, looking at Who is home as an embodiment of the love for my family, friends and even strangers! I really excited what this project has in store for me. Quite frankly, I don’t think I am fully in control of it but more of the project having the control and I am just a servant. The process for this project is increasingly becoming dependent on what I have, how feel, and what I read. And becoming less and less of what I think it should become.

The Duality of Home: Self as Space

Advancing more on my initial thought of what home is and what it can be, I am beginning to come to an understanding of the ‘dynamic’ nature of home as an embodiment of space, as the occupation of space, and as space. I am keeping in mind the questions what, who, and where is home? Last semester I was investigating and exploring the question ‘Who is home,’ which I was visually exploring and expanding on this theme as an embodiment of the love for my family, friends, and even strangers. I would interrogate this theme through means of reflecting on the nature of the relationship I have with the individual, how this relationship impact(s)ed my life, and how I want to see the person.

Space is a conceptual feeling that allows humans to engage in making sense of who they are, where they are, and what is happening around them.

In her book, The idea of Home: The Kind of Space, Mary Douglas speaks of home as a kind of dynamic space that has an element of landscape and portraiture. And also claims that the spaces in which they feast, rest, and laugh (my dorm) is not necessarily space which can be called home. ‘There is no place like home,’ but I would not stay. ‘Home is not always be a place of Happiness (Mary Douglas, 1991), now what happens if home is not a kind of space you no longer what to be in anymore, is it still home? Now this question makes me reflect on these questions more introspectively, I started to look at ‘home as Self.’ Perhaps, the idea of home as self does not make sense, but who said the idea of making exterior things home made sense? So, now there is a kind of conversation that arises, a conversation about the multidimensional nature of home in a dualistic or monic sense. Looking at this, I realized home can be anything and nothing at a time.

Home as the physical Home as non-physical Home as fantasy Home as reality Home as self Home as non-self Home as Space Home as matter Home as body Home as mind Home as life Home as death Home as existence Home as non-existence Home as something Home as nothing Home as a medium Home as expression Home as silence

The Reality of Home: Multidimensionality Self.

As I am expanding more into my research, I am finding more interesting things – concepts, theories, facts, and opinions that pose more questions around this line of questioning. Upon upholding this newly developing Idea of self as home I am beginning to venture into the opportunity of understanding of what home is in the contemporary times; what it means, what makes it, and what makes it to be as real as we think, believe, and know it to be? Also, thinking through the state of a home as being real or unreal, it starts to explore concepts of the existence of home (if truly it exists). The realization of the multidimensionality of home in my research, addresses the notion of realities within my world and this world (not implying the existence or non-existence outside this world), the conceptualization of these realities, and what it means of the word ‘real,’ the philosophies, sciences, and beliefs of these realities.
